How to Shrink a Golf Glove (easier than you think)

Accidentally buy a size of glove too large and lose the receipt or it’s past the return window? Or has your glove slightly stretched over time due to heavy usage and hundreds of times pulling the gloves off by the fingers?

Check out a golf glove size chart before buying gloves online. My advice is to try them on in a store before to ensure it has the ideal fit.
It’s risky and may damage the glove, but the best way to shrink a golf glove is to submerge the gloves in a sink filled with hot water and then use a blow dryer (low setting about 6 inches away) to dry it completely. How long you blow dry it will determine how much the glove will shrink.

How To Shrink a Cabretta Leather Golf Glove

An all leather golf glove is incredibly easy to shrink, you just have to be careful on how much and how fast you shrink it. You do not want to shrink it too much to where it doesn’t fit on your hand.

Submerge the golf glove in hot water for a few minutes. For a dirty golf glove, you can scrub it down with a washcloth while it is soaking. DO NOT use soap as this can damage the leather.

Shrinking Glove in Hot Water

Pull it out of the submerged water and lay it flat on a countertop. Now the easy part. Use a blow dryer on low heat setting about 6” away until the glove is dry. If further shrinkage (maybe it’s cold out) is needed, just keep the blow dryer at 6” away and periodically try the glove on to it’s desired fit.

Shrinking Glove by Blow Drying

After the leather is dry, immediately lather it with leather conditioner or coconut oil to soften the leather.

DO NOT use an iron or dryer to dry the glove, this will damage the glove beyond use. Also blow drying too close or too long can also damage the glove. The glove needs a slow, steady heat to shrink properly.

How To Shrink a Synthetic Leather Golf Glove

A synthetic glove will not shrink due to the synthetic fibers not being able to shrink. However, you can tighten the fibers enough to where it will feel like a tight new glove if it has loosened over time.

Use the same steps as a leather glove to tighten up the synthetic leather:

  1. Submerge glove in hot water for a few minutes (rub with washcloth if dirty)
  2. Blow dry on low heat 6” from glove until dry
  3. Use leather conditioner or coconut oil to soften the leather

If your glove has some cabretta leather in the palm or fingers, it may shrink the cabretta leather areas and not the synthetic leather. This will lead to a very uncomfortable fit and the glove may be junk. I would advise only trying to shrink a synthetic leather glove if it has no real leather on it!
