Best Putter Grips- Why The Grip Is So Important

Golf grips are one of the most important pieces of equipment in golf. Especially on the putter, where feel and control of the club are magnified. Even something as simple as the clubface being off a tenth of a degree could be the difference between making and missing that 5 foot par putt.

Putting comes down to confidence and the mindset you will make every putt you step up to. Having a great grip on the putter is a solid start to gaining confidence with the flat stick. Considering you take approximately half of your shots with the putter, you want to have a positive attitude when it comes to putting. Having a reliable, high performing putter grip will help you become a better golfer with lower scores!

You will want to find the ideal grip that matches your putter and putting stroke. Some golfers thrive with a skinnier grip to keep the hands active while others enjoy an oversized grip to primarily focus on the shoulders and arms in the putting stroke.

How We Picked And Tested Golf Grips

We tested each grip independently with hundreds of swings, from drivers to the delicate pitch shots around the green. We also scoured through thousands of reviews on Amazon, Rock Bottom Golf, Golf Galaxy, manufacturers website, etc. to help further validate our ratings.

Below are the top 5 most important factors we considered when ranking golf grips.

Performance
– How does the grip perform in all conditions a golfer may face in a round of golf? Does it give you the confidence to swing freely to go hunting for that tucked pin? Do you still get great grip in rainy weather? Performance is the most important factor for a golf glove in our rankings.

Comfort
– How does your grip feel going after it with a driver? Does it feel tacky and comfortable or is the grip rubbing away at your hands? We value comfort very highly because you need to be able to swing confidently and not have discomfort with the grip.

Price
Is the grip priced fairly compared to the quality of the grip? We understand everyone has different price points and do extensive research to ensure that our recommendations are great value golf grips.

Durability
– We research and validate that these grips are of good quality and will last as long as expected. No one has the time or money to continuously buy golf grips, we value grips that are made of high quality materials that last all conditions golfers will face (sweat, rain, mud/dirt, etc.)

Style
– A very minor ranking factor, but to some golfers it greatly matters how the golf grip looks. No one wants an extremely ugly looking grip, and a sharp looking grip will give you confidence throughout the round. If your equipment looks good, you feel good, and then play good.

Factors to consider when buying putter grip

There are so many different options when it comes to grip size, grip profile, etc. To get a good feeling of what works best for your putting stroke, I would go to a sporting good store or golf shop with dozens of putters and just practice putting with every different grip. Pick the one that feels best to you!

Grip Size

The grip size is very important and is not a one size fits all solution. Usually a smaller grip favors the putter who has a natural arc in their putting stroke with some face rotation (Tiger’s putting stroke is a great example).

A bigger grip favors the putter who brings the putter straight back and straight through on the same line (think Jason Day).

You have to experiment on what works best for you and try several different sizes. I know I prefer a smaller grip on a blade putter while usually favoring a bigger grip for the mallet putters.

Putter Grip Profile

The grip profile can be categorized into 6 different profiles as shown below.

  • Circle grip is the traditional grip profile is on your irons and woods. It can be in several sizes, Undersize all the way to Oversize/Jumbo. The circle putter grips can also be tapered or non-tapered.
  • Oval “paddle” putter grip is one of the more popular profiles today. The oval grip is helpful to keep the hands close together for a solid, reliable putting grip.
  • Flat Oval, Pistol, Flat Wide, and Modified Pistol all have wider flat tops. This is great for players with bigger hands or players who want to use the flat surface to have their hands feel “square” to the clubface.

Cost

Cost is always a major factor when it comes to buying anything golf related. Some people prefer the cheapest option possible, while some have to have the premium brand that the tour pros play.

Most golfers (myself included), prefer to have the best value possible, usually a higher end brand but maybe a year or two old. With putter grips, I’ve had just as much success with the Champkey grips as I have had the Winn or SuperStroke grips.

Best Premium Grip- Superstroke Zenergy Tour Putter Grip

It’s Best For: Golfer who wants tour-proven performance with a great value

Pros:
The “No Taper Technology” helps golfers keep even grip pressure throughout the stroke which boosts consistency.
New Spyne Technology has an embossed ridge along underside of grip making it easier to square the face at impact
Optimized texture profiles in high sensory areas to maximize feel, comfort, and feedback.
Top Tech-Port allows for counterweights as well as performance tracking sensors to help improve your game.
Cons:
One of the more expensive putter grips on the market.
Not much different from its incredibly popular predecessor Traxion grips.
May have to clean grips more due to its tacky surface. White portion of grips shows dirt easily. Not a big deal, but may have to clean grip more often than usual to maintain clean look.

Superstroke Zenergy Tour Grip Review

4.9/5 stars on Amazon- 82 ratings

The Zynergy line is a version 2.0 from the super popular Traxxion line among amateurs and pros alike. Listening to top amateurs and 450 worldwide tour pros, the several enhancements such as Spyne technology improves the way the grip transmits feel.

What stood out to me was two things: the two layer composition and the enhanced grip patterns.

The two layer composition is made up of a firmer rubber inner core for enhanced stability and the soft, tacky polyurethane outer layer to enhance grip. The combination of the two made it feel like my hands were molded into the grip, giving me instant feedback on every putt I hit.

The enhanced grip pattern is a bunch of variable texture zones to enhance feeling and makes your brain think your hands are locked in a familiar position every time. These include the traditional SuperStroke crosses in the front flat section as well as unique patterns in the palms and fingers giving you maximum feeling and feedback. I was impressed how well I could recognize the quality of the putt immediately after contact.

Performance: 5/5

As stated above, the Zenergy grip is the best putter grip by bringing state of the art technology to putter grips. The two layer grip gives maximum feel and feedback on every putt. You immediately know if you hit a great putt or not.

The new grip pattern and the familiar Spyne technology help amateurs and pros alike get a consistent, reliable grip on the club. I noticed I subconsciously aligns your hands after a few minutes putting with it. It felt like my hands naturally knew where to go on the grip thanks to the Spyne technology and grip pattern which maximizes feeling in your fingers.

I was blown away on how well I putted with this grip after just a few minutes. It’s easy to see why SuperStroke Zenergy grips are a major success among PGA stars like Rickie Fowler and Colin Morikawa. The enhanced feel and feedback are second to none.

Price: 4/5

The price point may drive people away, but you get the best performing putter grip on the PGA Tour. If you are one that is constantly looking for that small edge to beat your pals on the weekends, one of the more economical upgrades is a new putter grip.

At $28-$32 per grip, it is still a good value. If you are serious about your game and looking for improved feel and feedback on every putt, pick up a Zenergy grip today.

Comfort: 5/5

The softness of the polyurethane outer layer combined with the firm inner rubber layer produces one of the most comfortable grips I have ever come across. Combine that with the texture zones, your hands start to feel like an extension of the club.

The texture zones were a different feeling at first, but it amazed me how natural it felt after a few minutes of putting. The cross-hatched gritter regions on the sides of the top hand are meant to keep the hands locked in position. The smoother, slightly raised portion for the bottom of the hands was made to enhance feeling and feedback throughout the stroke and at impact.

Durability: 4.5/5

Like all SuperStroke grips, the durability seems to be industry-leading. Putter grips should not wear down due to the lack of grip pressure put on them, and these seem to hold up to the test of time. I know golfers who have had these for 2 golf seasons and have had no complaints, as well as no complaints on durability on various golf forums or product reviews on retail sites.

Style:  5/5

The Zenergy Putter Grips are the sharpest-looking putter grips in golf. The black and white grip is the closest they have to a “classic” style of grip, while the rest are a little more modern with the crossing graphics. My favorite has to be the blue, silver, and white.

It comes in 4 different sizes as well as the option of having counterweights.

ChampKey premium Pistol Putter Grip Review

4.7/5 stars on Amazon- 573 ratings

Champkey Golf Grips are becoming more and more popular as golfers are looking for ways to save money golfing. Champkey knows that golf is an expensive hobby, and they created high quality grips for an extremely affordable price.

Performance:  4/5 stars

I have been using a Champkey putter grip for my last 2 grips, and I have to say I’m impressed with the feel and control of the Premium pistol grip! It’s comparable to a SuperStroke grip, but at half the cost!

I’ll be honest, the feel and quality is a small tier below SuperStroke Traxion or Flat Cat. It’s close enough though that I think it’s definitely worth buying for half the price!

I love the non taper design. It allows your grip pressure to be evenly distributed, which has improved my distance control. Pair that with the advanced texture polyurethane grip that allows you to get a firm, but yet light grip on the putter for more consistent putts.

If you are looking to save money on golf while getting 80-90% of the performance of the premium putter grips, I would highly recommend the ChampKey Premium Pistol Grip!

Price: 5/5

These are currently half the price of SuperStroke and Winn grips! It’s a no brainer to buy this with comparable durability and performance at half the price.

Unless the quality somehow declines, I’ll have a hard time not recommending the CT Pistol Grip to everyone who is looking to save some money golfing.

Comfort: 3.5/5

I’m going to be honest, it’s not as comfy as the SuperStroke Traxion or Winn Pro grip. The rubber is a lower quality then you would get from the premium putter grips.

But for 1/2 of the price, it is close enough. I would say this putter has an average to above average feeling in your hands.

The rubber is soft enough that it allows you to have a relaxed, yet solid grip on the club. I feel like my putting has been as good as it has ever been, and I am extremely confident with the Premium pistol grip on my putter!

Durability: 4/5

The Premium Pistol Grip has been on my putter for a year now, and it’s good as new! There are several negative Amazon reviews about the grip having a cheap plastic feel, but I have had no issues with the grip wearing down or becoming slick.

Most golfer’s reviews agreed with me, they seem to hold up just as good as any Tour Pride or Winn grip. I’ve played with the premium Winn’s and Tour Pride’s, and the Premium grip is just as durable.

Even if the Premium grip only lasted 1/2 of the time, paying half the cost seems like a no brainer to me!

Style:  4.5/5

ChampKey does a great job at making some sharp looking budget grips. The 4 different styles consist of the primary color being black with secondary colors being blue, red, grey, and white. I have the blue (see below), and I think that blue and red are the best looking options.

Along with turning heads on the course, the secondary pattern shows where to grip your fingers at for a reliable putting stroke. This should give you full confidence to make every putt that you come across!

ChampKey Premium Pistol Grip = Outrageous Value, Above Average Grip for Dirt Cheap

The Champkey Premium Pistol grip delivers a fine golf grip. It’s not the best putter grip on the market, but this grip is for those golfers who value saving money over brand name items. The feeling and comfort is about 85-90% of the best SuperStroke grips.

If I got to redesign these grips, I would make them out of a different rubber to maximize the feeling immediatly after impact. Outside of that, these are a great alternative to SuperStroke grips and can save you $15+ every putter grip change!

4.2

Best Putter Grip for Left Hand Low – Flat Cat Original Putter Grip

It’s Best For: Golfer who is looking for help with hand placement and alignment

Pros:
Flat sided design on opposite signs naturally aligns your putter face to the intended target.
Light traction surface pattern provides great texture for a light, yet secure grip.
Non-slip surface pattern pulls moisture away from the surface giving you consistent traction in all conditions.
Available in 5 different sizes (Slim – 1.09″ Diameter) through (Big Boy -1.68″ Diameter).
Cons:
Dual flat sided design may be a dealbreaker to some golfers, it takes time to adjust to it
Difficult to install grip correctly, would advise to leave it to a professional
Only color of the grip is bright lime green
On the higher end of price range for grips at $25-$30/grip. Beginners may not want to spend that on a putter grip.

Flat Cat Original Putter Grip

4.8/5 stars on Amazon- 227 ratings

The Flat Cat Original Putter Grip provides a great alternative grip for golfers struggling to square the clubface to the target. It greatly helps you line it up during your putting routine as well as giving you a natural feeling of squaring the clubface to the target line at impact.

I was impressed by the flat parallel sides and how it took my hands out of the putting stroke. It really helped me produce a natural pendulum like stroke with my arms and shoulders, which is what all of the great putters in history of golf have ever done.

I believe this is a perfect grip for beginners who are looking for a more stable putting stroke as well as the 1-5 handicapper who is looking to hone in on their 3-5 foot putts. The parallel faces really help align the clubface to the target so you feel like you are starting every putt on line.

Performance:  4.5/5 stars

The Flat Cat Original Putter Grip is great for those golfers who are trying to have their hands and wrists less involved in the putting stroke. Not for everyone, but the Flat Cat does a great job at taking the smaller muscles out of play and producing a more natural pendulum type stroke.

The lightweight polyurethane grip provides a light and comfortable grip, and even remains tacky in the most humid and wet conditions.

Price: 3.5/5

The price is the main con of this revoluationary putter grip. At around $25-$30 per grip, it may be too much to spend for the beginner golfer who is trying to get started into golf.

That being said, I still think this is a great value grip for someone looking for a spark to improve their putting.

Comfort: 4.5/5

The Flat Cat grip is known for its comfort, and after a few putts it is easy to see why.

The scientifically designed texture allows you to grip the club lighter, leading to a greater feel in the stroke. The five footers don’t feel as nervy anymore. The parallel flats on the grip help line you up, giving you extreme confidence in your start lines.

Durability: 4/5

For a soft putter grip, this has been one of the longer lasting putter grips on the market. I have yet to find a golfer who has complained about the putter grip wearing down sooner than expected.

The Flat Cat grips have been known for their high quality, so expect a long lasting grip when you buy the Flat Cat Original Putter Grip.

Style:  3/5

They only have one color, lime green and white. Some golfers love it, while others hate it. I’m in the middle, I think it looks okay but wish there were other color options that would suit me better. If bright colors like lime green are a turn off for you, you may want to avoid this grip.

Flat Cat Original Putter Grip= Tour quality grip with alignment ridge to help set proper grip

The Flat Cat Original Putter grip is a great grip for all skill levels. It is a great experiment for those looking for a spark in their putting, as it helps line your putter square to the start line. It features a raised ridge on the back of the grip that helps beginners set their hands correctly on the grip and helps set up the clubface square to the ball.

The grip is also made of a high-quality rubber that provides excellent grip, even in wet and humid conditions. If you are okay with paying for quality grips and are okay with a raised ridge to help aid grip alignment, these grips would be a great tool to help improve your golf game!

Lamkin’s Genesis Material is better then traditional rubber, providing a highly tacky feel with maximum feel and comfort.
Perforations in leather give ultimate feel between club and hands during stroke
Stitch on back acts as a reminder rib to help properly set hands

Lamkin Deep Etched grips

Reviews- 4.7/5 stars of 394 Amazon reviews

The Lamkin Deep Etched grip has long been a favorite of PGA tour players due to it’s phenomenal responsiveness and feel. The softer-feeling Genesis material and it’s prominent horizontal etched pattern and smaller profile gives you ultimate control over the putter face during your putter stroke.

Lamkin Deep Etched is perfect for golfers with an arc putting stroke using a traditional, reverse overlap, or cross-handed grip style.

Performance: 5/5

The Lamkin Deep Etched grip is the ultimate grip for those searching for ultimate feedback and feel for every putt. Whether it’s a 3 footer or a 30 footer, you will immediatly know if you hit a good putt or not.

The Genesis Model maximizes the touch, feel, and traction of the grip on your hands. I felt a lot more stable in my putting stroke. It resulted in a smooth and repeatable putting stroke. It is an ultra firm grip though, so people who prefer a softer grip or have arthritis issues may not like this grip.

Price: 4.5/5

You get a great value for getting a top notch, durable grip for $12-$15. You are not only getting a tour proven grip at a low price, but one of the more durable grips out there.

This makes it a good value, and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a grip with maximum feel and feedback.

Comfort: 3.5/5

This ones tough to grade because while I enjoy the firmness and extraordinary feedback it provides, some golfers have hated the firm grip. It seems the younger crowd, espeically under 40, seem to have positive feedback on the grip.

If you prefer a firm grip that is still soft enough to give you a consistent feel, the Lamkin Deep Etched grip is perfect for you. If you still think that is not enough tackiness, the Deep Etched Cord grip would be a great fit.

Durability: 5/5

The Lamkin Deep Etched grip has a proven track record as its been a PGA tour staple for years. It’s safe to say if the pros can trust it, the average golfer should as well.

The firm grip with the Genesis material does not wear down as quickly as softer grips. So expect a longer lasting grip that maintains its great feel and tackiness throughout its life.

Style:  4/5

They have 4 standard options (black, red, blue, or gray). They all give a retro golf vibe off, a plain colored grip accentuated by the horizotnal etched pattern with a black end cap.

Some golfers love the retro look while others are turned off by it. I’m indifferent, I care more about how the grip affects my game than how the grips look.

SuperStroke Traxion Tour Grip Review

Reviews- 4.8/5 stars out of 3,956 Amazon Reviews

The Traxion Tour is the best “large” grip that SuperStroke has to offer. The large, taper-free grip promotes an even grip with the patented Spyne technology to help align the hands in the correct position everytime.

The Spyne technology features a embossed rib on the back of the club which is raised slightly and smoother than the rest of the grip. This small distinction helps your mind recognize your hands are in the correct position, and should allow you to make a more confident, repeatable putting stroke.

It is instantly recognizable due to the SuperStroke branding near the bottom of the grip. Sharp contrasts of different colors along with the silver band from the Spyne technology gives it a sharp, modern look. It has a geometric pattern that honeslty reminds me of the UA logo of Under Armour.

It comes in 3 different colors at the oversized option (White Gray, Black Gray, DigiCamo Tan).
