Does Golf Grip Solvent Stain Clothes? What You Should Know

Golf Grip Solvent is usually just mineral spirits rebranded as “golf grip solvent” so it can have a higher price tag. There are also several different types of DIY golf grip solvents such as mineral spirits, paint thinner, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid, Naptha, etc.

All Golf Grip Solvents and their substitutes will stain clothing. Good news is no matter what was used as a golf grip solvent, there are several simple steps to try and successfully remove the stain. See below on steps on how to remove any of the popular golf grip solvents from clothing.

If you get a stain in your clothes from golf grip solvent, do the following:

  1. Allow the solvent to evaporate
  2. Use Stain Remover
  3. Wash the clothes
  4. If stain is still there, repeat steps 2 & 3 if necessary
  5. Dry the clothes (will more then likely not be able to get stain out after drying)

How Long Does It Take For Golf Grip Solvent to Evaporate?

Under normal conditions, golf grip solvent or mineral spirits will evaporate in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Evaporation time will vary based on temperature, humidity, and ventilation of the area the clothes are stored in.

The time it takes for spirits to evaporate will also depend on what type of clothing (cotton, polyester, etc.) and how much solvent soaked into the clothing.

Does golf grip solvent totally evaporate?

Golf Grip Solvent will totally evaporate as it is a petroleum-based solvent. If you notice sticky residue after the clothing feeling dry, it’s not the spirits but most likely some dirt or grime that is still inside the clothing.

You will be able to wash excess dirt or grime away with either some sort of grease remover if it’s grease or grime and a simple cycle in the washer if it is dirt.

Does golf grip solvent Leave A Residue On Clothes?

Golf Grip Solvent will not leave a residue on clothes. However, clothes will absorb golf grip solvent or mineral spirits and develop a stain from them. The clothing will also most likely have a foul odor as well.

You shouldn’t throw the clothes away, as there are steps to remove the stains and odor from the clothing.

how to remove golf grip solvent stains from clothing

Golf Grip Solvent can be washed out of clothes, but the longer the solvent sits there after evaporating, the harder it will be to remove.

This process works for all golf grip solvent substitutes as well which includes lighter fluid stains, naphthalene stains, paint thinner stains, kerosene, etc.

  1. Allow the golf grip solvent to evaporate.
    • Give your clothes the appropriate drying time. It should take 15-20 minutes to completely evaporate, but may take longer depending on temperature, humidity, and the amount spilled onto the clothes.
  2. Rub Stain Remover in a gentle, circular motion over the entire stain. Allow stain remover to soak in for 10 minutes.
    • High Quality Stain Removers include:
      • Shout Advanced Stain Remover
      • Carbona Stain Devils- Motor Oil, Tar, & Lubricant
      • Goop Hand Cleaner
      • Kurd Kutter Cleaner & Degreaser
      • Baking Soda & Dawn Dish Soap
    • For those not looking to have harmful chemicals in their household, a combination of baking soda/Dawn dish soap would be best.
  3. Wash the Clothes
    • Now treat it like a normal load of laundry. One wash cycle should get the job done.
  4. Repeat if clothing is still stained or smells
    • If your clothing still has a stain or smells like solvent, repeat steps 2 & 3.
  5. Dry the Clothes
    • Dry your clothes like a normal load of laundry and inspect to see if the stain/smell is gone.
    • Only dry clothes after you are satisfied with appearance of stained area. After being thrown in the dryer, it will be nearly impossible to get the stain out.

Final Thoughts:

The good news is you may be able to save your favorite shirt after all if you spill golf grip solvent on it! I would strongly advise to wear your old clothes designated for garage work, garden work, etc. in case of spills like this. I would also advise on using paint thinner or mineral spirits you have laying around the house instead of purchasing overpriced golf grip solvent.
