If anyone has ever tried on football gloves (I’m guessing most of us haven’t since our High School days), you remember how sticky the football gloves felt and how it helped you make one handed catches with ease. Is there any way your golf glove could be a replacement for football gloves?
Golf Gloves do not work very well for football due to lack of stickiness and thin materials wear out quickly. I’ll further explain why golf gloves are a poor substitute for football gloves below.
Golf Glove | Football Glove | |
Stickiness | 1.5/10 | 9/10 |
Glove Thickness | .010 Inches | .025 Inches |
Glove Cost | $15-$40 (per pair) | $20-$60 (per pair) |
How Long Gloves Last Playing Football | 1-3 weeks | 1-3 years |
Golf Glove Stickiness vs. Football Glove Stickiness
There is no comparison here, the football glove grip trumps any golf glove grip and it’s not even close. The football glove was made for WRs to catch bullets on a 10 yard out pattern while the golf club was made to keep the golf club secure in your hands while swinging.
The best golf rain gloves are the stickiest of golf gloves and only provide 10-15% of what the average football glove has to offer in terms of tackiness. Golf gloves were not made to handle catching hard thrown footballs, so they will wear out extremely fast if worn while catching a football.
Golf Glove Material Thickness vs. Football Glove Material Thickness
Golf Gloves are made of real thin leather (natrual or synthetic) in order to provide maximum feel on even the most delicate pitch shots around the green. They were made for keeping a golf club stable while you swing, not trying to catch a hard thrown football.
Golf gloves can wear out in a month or two the way it is, I can’t imagine how quickly they would wear out catching hundreds of footballs a day like most WRs do. The friction between your hands, the gloves, and the hard thrown football would be enough to quickly wear down the golf gloves within 1-2 weeks and making them useless for both football and golf.
All of that friction would cause blisters as well, which are fortunately very avoidable in golf with the right size glove and grips.
It would get very expensive to try and replace golf gloves every 1-2 weeks if using them for just football and/or golf. There are plenty of ways to prolong your golf glove lifespan, but playing football with golf gloves is definitely not one of them.
Golf Glove Cost vs. Football Glove Cost
I’m not going to lie, I haven’t looked at football glove prices in probably the past 15 or so years and I am shocked at how cheap some of them are. The Cutters, Nikes, and Under Armour gloves are still $50-$75, but you can get the knockoff brands for around $20!
Considering the highest rated synthetic golf gloves are around $10 ($20 for a pair), you would be paying the same price for football gloves and a pair of golf gloves. Seems like a no brainer to stick with football gloves since they will last 15-20x longer than golf gloves.
Conclusion:
There is no real comparison. If you are planning on using gloves for football, buy actual Wide Receiver football gloves. They are 10x stickier, last 15x longer, and are similarly priced.
If you are looking for football glove alternatives, there are similar alternatives to golf gloves that might work such as finger tape and spraying hands with grip spray. If your hands break out due to wearing gloves, try to find a hypoallergenic football glove that will help you avoid pain and discomfort while playing.
It initially may seem like a good idea to use golf gloves for football to save some money, but in the long run you will be getting poor performance trying to catch footballs with golf gloves and will end up spending a lot more on golf gloves than if you would have just gotten a cheap pair of football gloves to begin with.
